The Cognitive Hierarchy in S2C

During a student’s first S2C lessons the practitioner starts by asking only spelling words and answers to “known” questions. That means every question posed has just one possible answer to it. The student only needs to hold onto the answer for a short period of time before executing a motor sequence on the letterboard and pointing to letters. Meanwhile, as (s)he progresses in terms of accuracy on the boards, we must also build up his/her ability to “think AND do” simultaneously. In other words, to improve praxis it’s critical to bridge ideation and motor execution in greater & greater levels of complexity as well as abstract concepts in order to someday have fully open-ended, novel conversations via AAC. As a guide, we consider Bloom’s Taxonomy an excellent resource for best practice in for categorizing cognitive goals. Click below to learn more about it.
